5 Things You May Not Know About Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is often sought when something doesn’t feel quite right — even if it’s hard to explain why. These five simple points help explain how CST works and who it may support.

1. It works with the nervous system, not just the muscles
Craniosacral therapy gently supports the system that protects and regulates the brain and spinal cord. When this system is under strain, the body may have difficulty relaxing, focusing, sleeping, or recovering from stress.
2. Gentle does not mean ineffective
CST uses about 5 grams of pressure — roughly the weight of a nickel. This light touch allows the body to respond without force, supporting natural regulation rather than pushing change.
3. Stress and tension can linger — even after “minor” events
Birth strain, falls, injuries, emotional stress, or long-standing posture patterns can leave subtle tension in the body. Craniosacral therapy helps identify and gently release these restrictions, even when the original event seemed small or long ago.
4. Many people don’t realize how much their body is compensating
Children and adults often adapt to tension by changing how they move, sit, focus, or respond to stress. CST can help reduce the need for these compensations, making everyday activities feel easier and less effortful.
5. It supports rest, regulation, and resilience
One of the most common experiences during craniosacral therapy is deep calm. By helping the nervous system shift out of constant “fight or flight,” CST supports better sleep, emotional regulation, recovery, and overall well-being.
